Reelfoot Library of Music and Sound

FARE YOU WELL - SONGS AFTER WINTER (RLMS 01)

This came to me from a friend in Chicago. Instead of trying to describe it, I'll steal from the site itself...I listened to this first installment and really enjoyed it...I can't wait to see what comes in the future. Kudos Reelfoot! From the site:

Fare You Well is our premier edition of compilations that we plan to release 2-3 times a year. This album is composed of tracks hand picked from the dusty vaults of the Reelfoot Library of Music and Sound as well as original recordings by various Reelfoot contributors. The purpose of this release is to bridge the gap between us and the good people who are in our hearts everyday. It is also an opportunity for our volunteers to browse deep into the vast collection of vinyl records, compact discs, reel to reel and cassette tapes, as well as MP3’s, which are located in the newly established “Digital” wing of the library. We collect rare, common, and many times, previously unheard recordings. We are the sister establishment to Reelfoot Books, a publishing experiment that will release small edition books and short stories.

    Lou Reed in Knoxville...

Two posts in one day? Sloooow down!

    LOU REED - TENNESSEE THEATRE
    8.00 pm SHARP (I'm told)
    Wednesday, April 30

    Blurry Records.

I'm taking a cue from a friend and fellow blogger...it seems that we lived tandem lives this weekend even though we're hundreds of miles apart. All that talk last week about Record Store Day, and I didn't even make it to a record store at all. I went out of town instead. So, I made up for it this weekend (and I still am, as we speak). I traded in some old, stale music for new records, and boy, has it been a while since I've done that. The economy of late doesn't really justify me splurging on music, but trading is another thing altogether. So, the pictures above are blurry and so is my brain. Lots of music was played yesterday, and is being played today. I'm glad it's raining out or I'd feel really bad using 2 days to make up for lost listening. On the speakers at the moment are new records by Elvis Costello, John Prine (well, new last year), The Raconteurs, and the first 4 albums by the Replacements which were reissued this week (awesome job on the reissues). Fionn Regan's "The End of History" is playing as I type, and next on deck is the new Howlin Rain. Maritime's latest is the one that is most stuck in my brain though..."Heresy and the Hotel Choir". Thanks to JWL for the tip on these guys...the first 4 tracks will hook you.

    EXIT

EXIT signs. Fireworks Warehouse. I-75, near Sweetwater, TN

Yesterday was perfect for a road-trip, so we took one. We drove to Atlanta and back...quite a bit on Highway 411, and this picture is where Highway 68 and I-75 meet (I think, between 411 and I-75). I've driven Hwy. 411 all the way back to Knoxville and it is a nice drive (one I would highly suggest taking), but we were running short on time so we headed back to the interstate on the way home. There is a great "Out-of-Stock" store that I need to go back to and check on Polaroid film...the last time I was there they had tons of expired film, but I didn't buy any. I should have. That was a couple of years ago. Looks like another reason to drive 411 on a beautiful weekend.

    RECORD STORE DAY

RECORD STORE DAY is tomorrow. Locally, the Disc Exchange is hosting a few bands and all kinds of specials...limited edition 7-inches, and all sorts of bonus materials have been made just for this day, so go out and support your local record store. Same goes for Lost and Found Records. Go to both...Links below.

A perfect day for me would be to wake up early...listen to the day's news while playing with the dogs, Grab a tall coffee at Java, drive (or walk as it may be) to Lost and Found Records to browse the vinyl selection, hit the Book Eddy for more used vinyl, and then walk through the Disc Exchange doors and see what they have to offer...and see some live music at the same time. At the end of all that, I would go home and slap some records on the platter...turn the speakers on the backporch up, and sip something cold and frothy while not hearing the neighbors yelling at their kids...and then I would feel better. For one, I would know that I supported my local record stores. I would also know that the neighbors were being forced to hear good, new music instead of hearing themselves argue over who's turn it is to get off the couch. Are you sensing neighbor troubles? More on that later...

    Cheers, Record Store Day!

Did I mention that I also have some photos on the walls at the Disc Exchange until the end of the month? Hmmm.

    Single on my mind

    Lookin' For a Thrill 7"

Knoxville (well, Blaine) native John Paul Keith has unleashed a new single on the world and it's available in 7" format...which is so nice. I would go into detail on how much (and why) I love the single, but I'm coming to realize that I'm not a music critic. To me, it's hard to be a music critic when you listen to music from the gut...when you feel it...cause when it sounds great, it just sounds great, and there is no trying to explain that. There's just the sharing and the listening to it over and over again. To analyze it would be an injustice. So, John Paul Keith and The One Four Fives have released "Lookin' For a Thrill" on 7" vinyl. Stop putting it off and dust off the old turntable, or go buy one (they're cheap these days). Hell, it's worth the price of the turntable to get this on the platter. Do it. Until you do, you can hear the single and B-side at JPK's MySpace page (linked below). I hope there is a full length 12" to follow soon.

You Memphians can grab a copy at Goner Records and also at Shangri La. If any of you non-Memphis people would like a copy, drop JPK a line and see about getting yourself one.
