WORK

Cover of Mix CD made of artists from England, Scotland, and Ireland. Nov. 07

Back of business card. Robin Surber, Artist. October 07.

I haven't been posting any of my freelance projects here. I don't really know why, but I thought I'd post a few samples here...just 2 of the projects I've worked on this fall/winter. The first is a mix-cd cover...not really a proper-project...it was sent to just a handful of friends, but a fun one nonetheless. If you want a copy of the disc just email me and maybe I can mail one out to you. The second is the back of a business card for Knoxville artist, Robin Surber. Robin's work uses items from her travels and personal life, combined with really beautiful illustration and collage-work. She is influenced by the southwest, so I used the turquoise blue type. It reads normally on the front, and I used my old typewriter for the type...I thought the handmade should be important...the stars were hand-stamped and scanned. 5 color print job. It was a fun one. Maybe I should have posted the front...hmmm...

SHED

Backyard Shed (almost complete). 01.22.08

So, we are having a shed built..it's almost finished. I just wanted to take the opportunity to talk about local business. We looked at pre-fab buildings at all of the home improvement places, and decided they were too bland for our tastes, and really expensive for what you get. We drew out what we wanted, and talked to a contractor about it. He worked up a materials list, and the goods were on our lawn the next day (84 lumber). They showed up that afternoon and the shed was almost complete in 2 days. I must say that the contractor approach was well worth the looking around and planning. It saved LOTS of money...wound up costing less than half what the Orange and Blue stores wanted, and gave work to a local business. Amazing. Plus, I think it looks much nicer, and it matches our garage and uses salvage windows and our original backdoor. Thanks to Tim Cupp and his crew here in Knoxville. I highly recommend them. I'll post after pics when it is painted.

EARLY VOTING

VOTING. Taken in Knoxville as part of the "Polling Place Project" - 2006. (the guy in the background didn't like me taking a photo for some reason)

So, I have always liked voting on actual election day...mostly for the experience of it, and to make myself feel like I was part of the political process. Waiting in lines can be fun. Well, this year will be my first experience in early-voting. If I can vote with a smaller crowd and let my voice influence some momentum for the candidates I support, then why not? I never thought about it like that before, but tonight I attended a canvassing-meeting for the candidate I'm backing in the presidential primaries (more on that later), and the question was raised as to why early voting was important. Well, if early voting results impact voting momentum then my early vote can make a difference in ways that my election day vote can't, so I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and get out there. I may even get out on the street this year in support of a candidate.

DON'T LET THE SUN GO DOWN...

    Knoxville Sunset Diptych. 1.13.08

We watched the documentary on songwriter/artist Daniel Johnston this weekend (The Devil and Daniel Johnston). I've been a fan of the music for a while, but never knew the whole story...and it is quite an interesting story. If you like documentaries of artists I highly recommend this one. Sometimes it is good to see the struggles of others (even on the big screen) in order to appreciate the creative process, or at the very least to understand what drives creativity. Sometimes it is driven by illness, and I find that the more I learn about mental illness the more I appreciate what drives people to create. I wonder what art would be like without some degree of mental instability, or without conditions such as depression and sadness? I'm always drawn to sad songs, and I suppose I'm drawn to sad movies...does that mean I'm also drawn to sad art? Well, the image here doesn't really have to do with Daniel Johnston, but I really like the song "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances" so I thought the sunset image fit. It was a beautiful evening in Knoxville. I hope Daniel Johnston has a good evening, and I hope he continues to make heartfelt, beautiful music.

    SENIORITY

Jellico Senior Center. January 6, 2008.

We drove back up to Jellico today...drove up to Williamsburg on 25w and on up to Corbin, KY where we ate at David's Buffett. They had good Chicken 'n' Dumplins. Sure did. The Jellico Senior Center is close to Kim's Mom's house, so I walked around a bit and had a look. I couldn't refuse taking a picture of this little guy in the window.

    WINDOW SHOPPING

Toilets. Western Avenue Salvage. Jan. 4 2008

Went shopping for salvage windows this morning....we are building a shed in the backyard and need old windows for light. Anyway, I saw these toilets and liked them. That's about it. Exciting, heh?
