Perspective on Portugal

POP title slide - from the collection of Mr. Henry Mass.

I'm starting a new blog...to go along with this one. There is a short description up on the new space so far, with more posts coming soon (in photographic form). This new blog is meant as a forum to document the found photos of Mr. Henry Mass. These slides were found (purchased) in a "junk" shop in Knoxville, Tennessee in 2005. They were all taken in Portugal by Mr. Mass, and the new space will serve as an outlet for me to scan and organize these photos into groups/categories that make some sort of sense....also, I want to highlight the collection that Mr. Mass took obvious pains and hours to produce, curate, and preserve for future viewing. I have attempted to contact friends and relatives of Mr. Mass to no avail, and will continue to do so as I would like to get formal permission to share his work. As it is, I would like to say that all of the photos on the blog are being roughly scanned by myself (very roughly) only as placeholder for eventual professional scans, and that all of the work on this blog is the property of Mr. Henry Mass and his estate (I only own the physical slides...not the years of hard work). Thanks for looking. Link below.

Playboys / Beer Pweeeez / Coverups

Three shots from Portland, OR / June 2009

I went to Portland, Oregon in June for an AIGA Leadership Retreat, and while I was there I managed to get a few shots in...here are three of them. Portland is a beautiful city, and I was lucky enough to be there while all of the flowers and bushes were in bloom. The Rose Parade was going on too, and that was fun to see. I'd like to go back and actually get to spend some time wandering around more. I should do that...

New Fall books for your reading pleasure...

Haynie - A Memoir of the New Left
Purcell - White Collar Radicals

Two newly designed books...coming at you real soon...

A MEMOIR OF THE NEW LEFT
“In Charles Haynie’s autobiography we get a rare look into the development of a great social movement through the quietly dramatic experiences of a rank-and-file member of that movement. This is valuable social history, but more important, Charles Haynie’s life is an inspiration for a new generation.” —Howard Zinn

WHITE COLLAR RADICALS
They came from all corners of the country-fifteen young, idealistic, educated men and women drawn to Knoxville, Tennessee, to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority, one of the first of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal projects. Mostly holding entry-level jobs, these young people became friends and lovers, connecting to one another at work and through other social and political networks...
What the fifteen failed to realize was that these activities-union organizing and, for most, membership in the Communist Party-would plunge them into a maelstrom that would endanger, and for some, destroy their livelihoods, social standing, and careers. White Collar Radicals follows their lives from New Deal activism in the 1930s through the 1940s and 1950s government investigations into what were perceived as subversive deeds.
