Outscape: Writings on Fences and Frontiers. Knoxville Writers' Guild. 2008

I have had the great fortune to work on a project edited by an old friend...Jesse Graves, and (a new friend) Jessie Janeshek. The Knoxville Writers' Guild will release this new anthology in October, and as I finalize the pages to send to the printer I can't help but say something about the work inside. It is a wonderful collection of local writers and artists speaking on the subject of fences and frontiers. Jesse and Jessie did a wonderful job in taking works (fiction, poetry, essays, and visual art) by a group of very different people and whittling them into to a cohesive, thought-provoking book on our fences and frontiers...the land and our relation to it...the cover photo is by another friend (jw lawson), and although I've chosen to obscure almost all of it (more on that later), it still manages to give us a slim shot at what the book holds inside...a sliver of our region, and a peek around the corner into our OUTSCAPE. Check it out in October. Link below:

    OLD, BROKEN STUFF

    Door-lock vacuum unit (exciting, huh?)

I love old things; Old cars, old bikes, old dogs, old beer cans, old magazines, old yada-yada...the problem with loving old stuff is having to fix old stuff. My philosophy has always been to pay a little bit more for quality products and they will last. Mostly true, I think. Anyway, I spent the day watching everything I touched turn to crap. Heh. You know those days. Parking ticket, flat tire (fixed that one), broken window and broken door locks (um, not fixed)...etc, etc...This is a picture of my passenger-side car door taken apart...I'm trying to fix the old vacuum locks and a window that won't roll up or down. I'm narrowing down the vacuum problem, and figured out I need to ride out to the junkyard to find a part to fix the window. Old parts do wear out eventually. For a 30 year old car, I guess I can't ask much more...I mean, when I hit 30 I started having a few loose screws myself.

    5.05

    Paul Westerberg - 5.05

So, the Paul Westerberg "album" 49:00 was pulled off of Amazon.com with no explanation, and released in it's place is a song called 5.05. Weird. I don't wanna get in the ring with the people trying to understand what's going on, but I am intrigued. If it's all a way to promote something new coming out, or a way to speak about copyright, or just a whim...whatever. It doesn't really matter, but it is interesting, and I like playing along. I like Paul Westerberg alot, and at the least I think it's good he's shaking things up...reminds me of Neil Young for some reason...which I've been on the back porch listening to all evening. It's a nice night here, and I can think of no better way to spend it than with the dogs curled up beside me and Neil Young and Paul Westerberg playing through the speakers. Links below:

    VACATE.

    Barcelona Graffiti / Fall, 2007.

I don't know what brought me to this image on this night, but I was looking through photos from last year, and this reminded me of how much fun I had (have) traveling. It reminded me of how I spent my time on vacation. My wife was in classes during the day, so I just picked a direction and walked for hours at a time...no real plan of action. Strange city, new sights...lots of energy and tons of inspiration. I wish we had graffiti this cool in East TN. I wish I could pick a direction and walk for hours and feel like I was on vacation...maybe I would. Maybe I should. I need a vacation.
